FAQs
You're getting married on Independence Day? I want to bring some fireworks to join in the celebrations!
No! I repeat, no, please do not plan on bringing any fireworks, or anything having to do with sparks or open flames to the M.V. Skansonia! The boat is extremely old and made of wood. We would prefer if our venue did not burn down on the day of our wedding, not to mention everyone will be promptly kicked off the boat. If you must celebrate with a cigarette or cigar, please make your way off the boat and to the parking lot.
What is the dress code?
We want everyone to enjoy themselves and be comfortable for the evening. That being said, we are big fans of dressing up and don't get the occasion to very often. If you feel like wearing black tie, go for it! If you'd rather a Canadian tuxedo, wear that (you'll get extra bonus points with the bride's family).
7pm is so late. Can you move the ceremony up any earlier?
Unfortunately, as part of our agreement with the Skansonia, we are only able to have guests on the boat after 7pm. There will probably be another wedding on the boat before ours that same day.
What should I do before the ceremony?
We want our guests to have fun and enjoy all the great activities going on for 4th of July. Please check out the Seattle page for some ideas of what to do. We also highly recommend grabbing a drink at Ivar's Salmon House beforehand. You'll get great views and delicious seafood. Nearby Gasworks Park will also be bustling with activities.
Should I eat before I come? What exactly will be included in the buffet?
We hope to have more details on the actual menu closer to the date, but it will be a full meal with different options for different diets. And of course, there will be dessert.
Will the ceremony be inside or outside?
We are hoping to have the ceremony outside if it is a nice day, however, the Skansonia staff are well-prepared to set up the ceremony inside if the weather turns bad. Remember it is Seattle, so it will get chilly later in the evening. We ask that you bring a light jacket so that you can enjoy the fireworks outside.
So you're getting married on a boat, does that mean we are going for a ride around Lake Union?
Unfortunately, no. The MV Skansonia is a permanently moored ferry boat from the 1920s. It probably can't go anywhere, and even if it could, 4th of July is a very busy time on the lake.
I get seasick. Should I still come?
Yes! Please do. We have talked with staff who assured us that no one has ever been sick on the Skansonia. We have been there ourselves and there is very little noticable movement. There are also many large windows and big open doors to get some fresh air if you start to feel queasy.
